Safeway Beer & Wine Hearing

A public hearing on Safeway's request to sell beer and wine at its 6500 Georgia Ave., NW store will be held on Wed., April 25, 10:30 a.m. at the D.C. Alcoholic Beverage Control Board's hearing room, 941 N. Capitol St., NE, 7th Floor.

Safeway's license has been under discussion for about four years.  Several years ago, more than half of the voters near the store asked the city not to approve the license, but that formal request remains unresolved and may go to the courts. These neighbors believe that there are too many alcohol-oriented retail stores on Georgia Avenue and that an additional license will increase litter and loitering.

The April 25 hearing offers neighbors another way to present the Board with evidence for or against the license.  Every resident can testify.

Dog Park Comment Deadline: May 1

Our Parks and Recreation Department is soliciting comments on proposed rules for the establishment of dog parks. For example, if adopted, dog parks would have to be set back 200 feet from structures and there can be no rats within five square blocks of the site.

Public meetings on the proposal are set for April 19, 6:30-8 p.m. at the Takoma Rec Center, 300 Van Buren St., NW, and on April 23, 6:30-8 p.m. at the King Greenleaf Rec Center, 201 N St., NW.  Comments can be sent to the DC Parks & Recreation Dept., 3149 16th St., NW, 20010.  Call C.J. Lilly at 671-0417 for information.
